Stone Driveways

Whilst the naming convention of block paving is mostly associated with block bricks it is also interchanged to mean the process deployed when constructing a driveway which essentially consists of laying some sort of stone, block or pave stone over a prepared ground base. At Driveways Sheffield we are able to work with any stone or block to transform your driveway. Since there as such a massive choice of stones and paving blocks available with new options becoming available each season it is almost impossible to list all options. If you have some initial idea of the style you want we can provide a full supply and fit stone driveway service or, alternatively if you have sourced a particular stone which is exact style and size you were looking for, we can operate an install only service. However, it is important to engage with us early on in the process, so that you are aware of what supporting materials we will want provide to ensure that we are happy to put our name against the level and quality of the install. Below we've provided a little more information on a few of the more popular cobbled and paved driveways.

Cobbled Drives and Stone Driveways

Cobbled Driveway Sheffield

Cobbles probably provide a driveway with the most dated character with some of the earliest cobbled roads dating back to Roman times in the 3rd and 4th century. Whilst they wouldn't have provided the most comfortable of rides, especially for a wagon or chariot, for parking up on a driveway they ooze character. With modern cars and inflated tyres driving on them is no issue so their slightly uneven surface is their charm.
As well as new cobblestones many driveways use reclaimed cobble which works just as well. even though their shape will be more random and slightly rounded they can be levelled reasonably well. There will be more variation in the gaps between cobbles as a result but since this forms part of their aesthetic character this is rarely an issue. They provide a
hardwearing robust surface but with the only potential issue relating to the gaps where weeds and moss may tend to build up if not cleaned regularly.

Indian Stone Driveway Sheffield

Grey Indian stone driveways and buff coloured are the most popular colours for Indian stone. If you are thinking of sourcing your own, please ensure you select driveway grade which will be thicker and suitable for vehicles. Of you select the patio versions you it will be very likely that some of the paving stones will crack with vehicle movement and weight. Since Indian stone will come in different sizes the mixing of these creates a much more interesting finish which gives great character to a drive and as such we are seeing this option more and more, especially where a property has a driveway and garden which flows around a property so at the rear of the property a seamless patio is created too.

Belgian Blue Stone Driveway

Belgian blue is a limestone pavestone and is popular due to is subtle blue grey colour.  Even though it is a limestone it is a robust paving option due to its dense make up, which provides strength and water resistance. Low water absorption makes this stone frost and ice resistant and with slightly rounded edges and a flat main body also makes it one of the more smoother cobbled driveway options.

Granite Cobble Sett Driveway

Granite is also another stone which provides a character feel to a driveway, whilst also available as cobbles, granite is commonly available as a sett. The difference between a sett and a cobble is down to its formation and shape. As sett is cut to shape and is therefore more angular and rectangle than its counterpart cobble, which will be more naturally rounded. As well as being available in these two format granite and some other stones are also available as carpet stones. With carpet stones, or mats a number of stones are pre-connected using a mesh so are already pre-spaced and allows for multi-blocks to be laid down in one go which will speed up the installation process which is the main advantage over laying individual stones one at a time. This does, however limit the patterns you may want to create with your cobbles unlike individual stones which allow complete flexibility. However, it is possible to combine the two together, depending in the patterns you wish to create and the availability of the same stone in both formats.

Frequently Asked Cobbled Driveway Questions

  • What is the best driveway finish?

Well, we're going to sit on the fence for this one.  Unfortunately, this isn't one single option which will be best for everyone which is why we like to offer you a wide choice. Budget, colour, style, drainage, ongoing maintenance all play a part. Every individual will place a different level of the importance of which of these driveways features are going to be most important to them. so depending on the importance and order of each of these factors will end up narrowing down the choice of which is the best driveway for YOU!

  • Do I need to have a permeable driveway?

A permeable driveway is one that enables water, mostly rain, to soak through the surface of the driveway and into the ground.

Due to the rise in roads and homes and as more non-permeable surfaces emerged rainwater began to have fewer locations to go. To protect against the issue from getting even worse, councils have actually imposed regulations that favour permeable driveways.

Absorptive driveways allow water to saturate through right into the ground straight below. Examples are porous asphalt, block paving, cobbled and resin-bound.

For basic tarmac, concrete and pattern concrete extra soaks and drainage might be needed depending upon the slope and the likely direction rain would certainly flow. This can add to costs and also lessen a few of the visual allure of your driveway by the inclusion of a drain system.

  • If my driveway needs sealing how often should I do it?

Sealing is for non-permeable driveways such as Imprinted and concrete driveways and tarmac which will certainly need sealing to avoid your driveway from discolouring (imprinted concrete) or breaking. It also supplies a defensive finish to your drive, so if fluid is dropped onto its surface area the sealer will postpone the ingress of the spilt liquid from getting into the concrete and creating an irreversible discolouring.

Before applying a sealant do make sure that the surface area is totally dry. If you treat your driveway every 2 -3 years you will reduce damage to your non=permeable driveway and for imprinted driveways, this will certainly preserve its great looks year after year.

  • Can patio slabs be painted?

The short answer is yes. However, if you are thinking of painting your patio rather than replacing it you really should not try to do this on the cheap. High-quality acrylic based paints would be best. However, you should be aware that to provide durability these paints will need to be applied thickly and in several coats with a brush or roller. also, they should be left to dry naturally for a few days so please check the forecast before embarking on this route.

The key is to manage your expectations - remember this is simply a coating and will be subjected to table and chair bumps and scrapes. It may provide a band-aid approach to improving the look of your patio for a couple of seasons but once the paint starts to chip away it will start to chip away more and more. Once this happens trying to overpaint again will not look great!

  • Can you lay paving slabs directly onto grass?

Essentially you can lay a paving slab on any surface but you need to think about what will be the end result. If you just wanted to utilise the odd slab as a stepping stone then will a little ground manipulation and sand you could effectively provide a stone that can be stepped on. However, if you are planning on setting chairs, tables, barbeques you will need to properly set your paving stones into a properly prepared sub base which will provide a solid base for your slabs to be fixed to. This will prevent weeds from coming up through paving stone joints and ensure you don't have loose wobbly slabs.
